The castle was probably founded by Walter de Lacy after the Norman conquest and was one of the first stone castles to be built in England. In the 21st century, Ludlow Castle is owned by John Herbert, the current Earl of Powis, but is held and managed by the Trustees of the Powis Castle Estate as a tourist attraction.
