In 1910 Debenham was one of a group of three geologists on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's AntarcticTerra Nova Expedition (1910–1913). During WW1 Debenham served as a Lieutenant with the 7th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in France and Salonika, and was severely wounded in August 1916.
