Paul Charles Joseph Bourget (French:2 September 1852 - 25 December 1935) was a French novelist and critic. He afterwards studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand and at the École des Hautes Études. It is the story of philosopher Adrien Sixte, whose advocacy of materialism and positivism wields a terrible influence over an admiring but unstable student, Robert Geslon, whose actions, in turn, lead to the tragic death of a young woman.
