He joined Supermarine Aviation Works Ltd in August 1937, and served his apprenticeship as an aircraft engineer. He was subsequently employed as a draughtsman on a variety of work. He left the company in 1958, after twenty one years service, shortly before the demise of Supermarine as an aircraft manufacturer. During the war he was a member of the Royal Observer Corps as a part-time post observer, later becoming Post Instructor (leading Observer) serving until 1958. John learnt to fly with the Wiltshire School of Flying, at High Post, in 1946.
