…… This auction is for a 19th-century Hand Illuminated Christian Scripture Parables Book, bound in black Thermo-Plastic Boards. Measuring 6 ½” tall by 4 ¾” wide. Published in London in 1847 by Longman & Co., this “Parables of our Lord” book has sixteen hand-illuminated pages, including the gold gilt title page, illustrated by Henry Noel Humphreys (1810-1879), a British illustrator, naturalist, and numismatist. The parables have illuminated title pages, many of them depicting miniature painted scenes. The pages are gilded on all three edges, and the pastedowns are hand-marbled. Many of the pages are separated, but they are all present. There is an inscription on the blank flyleaf that begins “Presented to the Read Richard …. by his fortunate….” and is dated December 10, 1846.
