Her father, David Mitchell, emigrated to Australia in 1852. At the age of six she appeared in the concert hall and sang two ballads in Scottish dialect. In 1882 she married Captain Charles Porter Armstrong, who owned a sugar cane farm in North Queensland, at a very young age.
