But this book tells a wider story than that of the expedition alone. Gates was a Victorian schoolboy from a comfortable home, numbering Eton amongst his schools, and winter trips to South Africa and Madeira amongst his journeys. After much effort and study he joined one of the British Army's outstanding cavalry regiments, the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, and served in Ireland, actively in South Africa during the Boer War, in Egypt and in India.
