CDV of the journalist and historian, Goldwin Smith. He famously championed the cause of the North during the American Civil War and his pamphlets played a large part in converting public opinion in England. He visited America on a lecture tour in 1864. Smith was also a strong advocate for believing that Canada should become part of the USA.
