[10] ff, 672 pp, [i] blank. A 12 mo in contemporary stiff, vellum with yapped edges. Engraved title page signed: Corn. Cl., Duysend sculp. Head and tail pieces. Handwritten brown ink, title on spine. A short crack in the vellum at the front joint,, does not affect book block. Title page bottom cut off but date, and place still present. Title page attached directly to front, pastedown and starting to separate a bit at the gutter/join,, one page has some old marginalia in brown ink, otherwise, interior paper clean and unmarked. One pinprick wormhole in the, margin of a few pages. A handsome small "pocket" collection of, the great Erasmus's "Colloquia" printed by the esteemed, Amsterdam printer, the House of Elzevir. Erasmus was a, Christian humanist, one who delighted in using little stories, -- often humorous or scandalous -- to instruct students and, readers in certain areas of faith, morality and behavior. The, Church, however, did not always see eye to eye with Erasmus and, he was in and out of favor through the years, with many of his, works being banned or expurgated. This collection of little, stories or "conversations" includes such gems as his "Opulentia, sordida," which speaks of the rich miser who starves his worker, -- a thinly veiled attack on the famous printer Aldus Manutius;, or "Adolescentis et scorti," the story of a man who talks to a, prostitute and tries to convince her to leave her life of sin, (perhaps Gladstone's inspiration) ; or "Epicureus," in which, Erasmus discusses early Greek philosophy and the relationship, between pleasure and faith; or "Inquisitio de fide" in which a, Catholic is surpised to discover that Lutherans are not, heretics but true Christians, etc. A nice copy of this charming, Elzevir edition.
