This handbook of the modern Assyrian language was composed by Lt. R. Hart, an officer serving in the Assyrian Levies, and was printed by Qashisha Yosip De Kelaita at the Assyrian Press in Mosul in 1926. The Levies were a military force created by the British that served with distinction in Iraq and in Europe during World War II. It was disbanded in 1955. The handbook includes sections on grammar and vocabulary as well as useful phrases and military words as it was designed to help both the British officers and the Assyrians better understand one another. Included are three additional publications of the press: a first Assyrian reader (1928), a second Assyrian reader (1924) and the Assyrian Teacher, a reader written by Binyamin Arsanis (1925).
