McConnochie in 1923—have attempted to describe the deer forests of Scotland and although their books contain much of historical interest, both concern themselves only with the recognized deer forests and are deficient in essential statistics. Moreover, the recognized deer forests of Scotland, covering some two and three-quarter million acres, number less than 190 whereas there are several hundred other properties—sheep ground, grouse moor, etc.—on which the red deer is pursued with a rifle.
