Son of Gustave Derennes (1858-1889), associate professor of history then academy inspector and Breton writer, born in Charente and originally from Mayenne, and of Marthe Cassan, daughter of a baker and Aquitaine grain merchant from Villeneuvois , he spent his childhood in Villeneuve-sur-Lot.
