Gutes Ex. - Englisch; japanisch. - Vorwort Hans R. Hoetink. - The emergence around 1610 of so many painters of genius in an area of less than sixty miles Square, is one of the most remarkable occurrences in the history of painting. The speed and energy with which the culture of the young Republic developed a character of its own while successfully opposing the military might of Spain and freeing itself from the more developed Catholic Southern Netherlands is unparalleled in European history. In 1609, after an armed struggle lasting some forty years, the Northern Netherlands negotiated a truce with the enemy, Spain, thereby securing its independence and its freedom. So began a fascinating period lasting approximately seventy-five years in which the emerging Dutch Republic reached unprecedented economic, political and cultural heights.
