ADLER STERBEN Franz Joseph, Elisabeth & ihr Österreich, MAREK. Habsburger Reich
THE EAGLES DIE Franz Joseph, Elisabeth and their Austria GEORGE R. MAREK PBS/BOOK CLUB EDITION 1974 24 x 16 cm. xii + 532 pp. HB/DJ In 1848 - the year of revolution, when the flames that erupted in France blazed eastward across Europe - eighteen-year-old Franz Joseph was crowned Emperor of Austria. In 1916, in the midst of a new conflagration, the Emperor died in his bed, one of the few late Habsburgs to enjoy that privilege. By then his brother, his only son, his wife, and the nephew who was to succeed him had all met violent ends, and his empire rocked on the verge of disintegration. George Marek has chosen to present this epic drama in terms of the two individuals whose personal lives - temperaments, tastes, talents, and limitations - largely determined the outcome.
