Erasmus himself was vague about the details of his early life in the few autobiographical references he ever made, but the majority of scholars now tend to accept the year 1469 as the most probable. At any rate, it has been generally agreed in Erasmian circles to observe the year 1969 as the 500th anniversary of his birth.
