GESCHICHTE SÜDRHODESIENS Frühe Tage bis 1934. Gann. Zentralafrika, Simbabwe
A HISTORY OF SOUTHERN RHODESIA Early days to 1934. LEWIS H. GANN. LONDON: CHATTO & WINDUS 1965 1st edition. 24 x 16 cm. xi + 354 pp + folding map. This is the officially commissioned history prepared by a German scholar who was educated in England and employed by the National Archives of Rhodesia in 1954. Frequently indicted as a white apologist, he attempts a balanced appraisal of the contribution of white settlers to Rhodesia culminating in the creation of the Federation, although this latter episode is not covered in the volume. Less than 25 per cent of the book deals with the pre-colonial period. It is a standard reference book but should not be used without supplemental texts. Gann finally left Rhodesia for Stanford University and the Hoover Institution. (Pollak; Rhodesia/Zimbabwe).
