Herbert List (October 7, 1903 – April 4, 1975) was a German photographer whose work appeared in various high-profile magazines of the time, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Life. He was also associated with Magnum Photos. Herbert List is known for is austere, classically-posed black-and-white compositions, often of males and male nudes, most taken in Italy and Greece. His influence and style have had a large impact on modern photography, including the works of contemporary fashion photographers Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber.Stephen Spender writes the introcution. List took the photograph for the cover of Spender's autobiography. Gilbert Adair used one of List's photographs for the cover his novel Love and Death on Long Island.
