Herman Scherchen discovered the world of Beethoven at the age of fourteen. Between 1951 and 1954 he made the mono recordings of all nine symphonies for the US label Westminster, either in Vienna with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, the Symphonic Orchestra and in London with Beecham’s excellent Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
