Gabos studied with Lajos Hernädi at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where he received a concert diploma. In 1955 he finished third at the Concours Long-Thibaud-Crespin. In 1958 he shared with Wolfgang Gayler and Rolf Kuhnert the second place at the Kranichstein Music Prize (piano) in Darmstadt.
