Sparks was the 17th president of Harvard College and chaplain of the US House of Representatives. His Writings of George Washington was his most important published work. He was criticized by Lord Mahon for liberal editing by addition and subtraction of language from the original manuscripts, but defended himself ably in this pamphlet, and Mahon later capitulated and modified his complaints.
