Frenchman Andre Jolivet (1905-1974) was an almost exact contemporary of Dmitri Shostakovich, so it's interesting to contrast the two. But DSCH faced official disapproval for not being tuneful and simple enough, while AJ faced disapproval for not being modernist enough -- his music was largely ignored by a culture focused on the cutting edge, and Jolivet's refusal to accept serialism kept him in the doghouse.
