Lion Dance. [Folding cardboard with art print of Japanese woodblock]. Artist Unk
Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - O-Oban Sumizurie with Hand Coloring - (Important Art Object) The lion dance originated as one of the attractions of the Daikagura, a street processional of the great shrine of Ise. A similar dance was also performed in Edo each January. The performers, who entertained at the gates of homes and shops to collect alms, included two lion dancers for the head and body, a lion coaxer wearing a long-nosed demon mask who beat together two slivered-bamboo musical sticks, and several other musicians. The compositional movement is circular, centered around the lion, and including the figure with the parasol, the flutist, and the two drummers.
