London Midland Dampf über Form
London Midland Steam Over Shap. The name of Shap is almost legendary in the annals of Britain's railways. The climb of the West Coast main line from the shores of Morecambe Bay up to Shap summit in the Westmorland fells en route to Scotland was longer and more severe than any other carrying comparable traffic, culminating in four miles at 1 in 75 for north-bound trains immediately beyond Tebay. Amid such a scenic setting, between the high Pennines and the Lake District mountains, the line over Shap deserves a volume to itself. With the heavy and varied Anglo-Scottish traffic, its fifty-odd miles had few rivals in railway interest in the days of steam.
