Slightly scuffed, but fine overall. - Yigael Yadin is Professor of Archaeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was formerly Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces. An archaeologist of distinction, in 1955-8 he directed the excavations at Hazor, in 1960-1 he led the explorations of the Judaean Desert caves where the Bar-Kokhba documents were discovered, and in 1963-5 he was the Director of excavations at Masada. In 1956 he was awarded the Israel Prize in Jewish studies and in 1965 the Rothschild Prize in Humanities. In 1964 he was elected member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities and in 1965 Membre correspondant of the French Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres. In 1966 he was elected a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, where he gave the 1970 Schweich Lectures.
