Gutes Ex. - Englisch; französisch. // When we examine the large figures, the small sculptures and the many ritual objects made by the tribes of the western border of British Columbia and brought together in the exhibition organized by the "Society of Friends of the Museum of Man", we find that their chief characteristics derive from their association with the hopes and wishes of men frequently beset by malevolent spirits. Take the masks for instance, or better the totem poles, or better still the rattles, the charms, the amulets, the heraldic motifs on the house fronts, the partitions and canoes: all are instruments for arousing mysterious forces and compelling them to appear. The call of the unknown and the supernatural vibrates in these objects, created by cultures in which their ancestors relive. The exhibits reveal all this and more.
