Africana collectanea series Volume XLIV In spite of the fact that General Ben Viljoen (Assistant Commandant-General of the Transvaal Forces and Member for Johannesburg in the Transvaal Volksraad) describes hiruself as "a simple Afrikander" and says "I lay no claim to any literary ability", this book, first published in 1902, makes most interesting reading. It is characterised by the author's fairness and a notable lack of rancour. On four occasions the author was deprived of his notes and diaries and has therefore had to rely to a great extent on his memory for details of exact names and dates.
