Its burdensome style, allegories based on alien associations and appealing to emotions which we do not experience, distance it effectively from a modem reader. What it presents on the stage is a larger or smaller episode in the eternal struggle between good and evil: the struggle for a human soul; always the same, though taking place in various settings and at different times.
