Pseudo-Hecataeus On the Jews. Legitimizing the Jewish Diaspora. Bezalel, Bar-Koc
From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Minimal soiled binding. Otherwise in very good condition. - Content: What was the purpose of the much-discussed ethnographic treatise On the Jews? Ascribed to the well-known Hellenistic author Hecataeus of Abdera (late fourth-century B.C.), the treatise itself, except for some excerpts recorded in Josephus Flaviuss celebrated apologetic Against Apion, has been lost. The authenticity of On the Jews has been disputed since the second century A.D., and with this detailed study, Bar-Kochva attempts to overcome the stalemate in the scholarly debate by proving that the treatise was a Jewish forgery written about too b.c.
