Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, for example, told the story of the mad first Mrs. Rochester from Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. It is a wonderful read, utterly independent of Jane Eyre. Sally Beauman fails to achieve anything like this success.
