The two large exhibitions in Edinburgh and Lyon, which will include quite different works in each case, should demonstrate the singularity of his working methods, and the remarkable presence and formal beauty of the finished sculptures. It is one of the achievements of Michael Newman's essay on the work, published in this catalogue, to take Deacon's sculpture out of the terms of a kind of 'apostolic succession' - in which the mantle of British sculpture is somehow passed on from generation to generation - and to discuss the work within a much wider and more far-reaching sculptural and intellectual field.
