There's also a great deal of invention in Salieri'sVariations on "La Folia di Spagna", which was his last orchestral work, from 1815. Not all the variations sparkle, but as there are 26 of them it's hard to imagine anyone other than Beethoven or Mozart keeping up the inventiveness though so many of them.
