Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) was the f ounder of his own school and the son of a samurai. Between 1876-1881, he produced many popular prints in large numbers. Kiyochika also famously designed large triptychs glorifying the battles of the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars, with the occasional pentaptych, though seldom equal to his early still-lifes or abundant fukeiga of the Tokyo landscape.
