Selkirk obtained its original charter in the twelfth century from David I and it is one of the oldest burghs in Scotland. Statues in the town celebrate its association with the explorer Mungo Park and Sir Walter Scott, who was sheriff-deputy of the county of Selkirk and based at Selkirk’s courthouse in the town square.
