In August 1808, Sir Richard D Henegan landed in Portugal as part of the British army sent to stop the French invasion of the Iberian Peninsula and put an end to Napoleon's Imperial ambitions. For his service during these campaigns he was awarded the title of Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order, a decoration founded by George III and handed out for distinguished services to the UK from 1815-1837.
