At the age of three his family moved to Manchuria, and while still at elementary school he edited and published a newspaper with a few school friends. With the breakup of his parents' marriage he returned to Japan with his mother; and in 1934 he was baptized into the Catholic Church. After graduating in French literature from Keio University, he spent two and a half years on a scholarship in Lyon -an experience reflected in several later novels. One of these, Shiroi Hito (The White Man), was awarded the prestigious Akutagawa Prize, the first of many literary prizes to come his way.
