Although the Antigone, Oedipus Tyrannus (Oedipus the King in this translation), and Oedipus at Colonus are often grouped together as the 'Theban Plays', they are not a trilogy in the way that the three plays of Aeschylus' Oresteia form a trilogy. Sophocles' three dramas about the house of Oedipus, king of Thebes, were written at three widely spaced intervals: Antigone probably in 442-441 BC, Oedipus Tyrannus probably between 429 and 425 BC, and Oedipus at Colonus in the last years of the poet's life. This last was presented posthumously by his grandson (also named Sophocles) in 402-401 BC.
