The screenplay was based on the 1973 novel Harvest Home by Tom Tryon and is largely faithful to the original material. Unhappy advertising company employee Nicholas Constantine, his wife Beth, and their daughter Kate move to the quiet New England village of Cornwall Combe, and soon become deeply involved in the town's mysterious rituals.
