The trilogy, however, never materialized. It is just as well since the polemical fervor that surrounded the quincentennial would not have warmly received Amado"s satirical and impish novel. Partly at the suggestion of his wife, Amado chose for his Columbus project to elaborate on a discarded passage from his 1984 novel, Showdown, about a Lebanese peddler in early twentieth-century Brazil.
