In this book, Prof. Baldry sees the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides in their original setting: the festivals of Dionysus at Athens in the fifth century BC. His early chapters consider the organisation and financing of the festivals the theatre and its audience, the appearance and function of actors and chorus. Against this background, he discusses the plays: their form, dramatisation of legend, and treatment of character, illustrating the differences between the three great tragic playwrights by their versions of Orestes' revenge.
