Peter Carey was born in New York City in 1938. He worked first for Price Waterhouse and then for Citibank, becoming a vice president in 1987. In 1994 he was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia and nearly died, but in 2000 he was fortunate enough to be the recipient of one of the first genetically engineered cancer drugs, and fully recovered.
