If this little book succeeds in convincing the reader that ethnolog-ical research is not only of academic interest, but also of practical value for a state burdened with the task of helping to develop a multitude of very different ethnic and cultural groups, then we should like to suggest to our friends and colleagues in Pakistan that they continue and finish the work we were unable to complete for want of time. Our subject was the Jat; why shall be explained in the next chapter. Our problem is a historical one: to examine cultural and ethnic relations between Pakistan and Iraq. This theme will demand some years more of literary study, but we already have some un-expected results after analyzing our purely ethnographical data.
