The past is often mentioned while the future is kept uncertain. The first half of the play concentrates on Electra's recognition of Orestes and on the preparation for the attack of the usurpers. An all-important preliminary to these preparations is the great conjuration designed to arouse the ghost of Agamemnon and to ensure its active collaboration in the destruction of the murderers. The second part of the play shows how Orestes enters the palace and carries out his task.
