THE MONS STAR The British Expeditionary Force 5th Aug- 22nd Nov 1914 DAVID ASCOLI BOOK CLUB ASSOCIATES 1982 16 x 24 cm. xxii + 250 pp. HB/DJ The first campaign medal of the Great War – The 1914 Star- was struck in 1917 In October 1919, by command of the King a bar bearing the dates '5th Aug.-22nd Nov.14' was awarded to all holders of the medal who had been under fire - i.e., 'within range of enemy mobile artillery' - in France and Flanders between the qualifying dates Fewer than 230,000 bars were awarded. The recipients-and only they-were and are the Old Contemptibles. Their very special medal has come to be known, by hallowed tradition, as the 'Mons Star'; and this is their story.
