Both brothers served as members of the Washington Artillery, and this memoir was prepared for presentation at the 50th anniversary of the departure of the unit from New Orleans for the seat of war in Virginia. Baker confines himself mainly to his personal observations and experiences while campaigning with the Army of Northern Virginia. The Washington Artillery was mustered in on May 26, 1861.
