Woman of the Mountain and Kintaro. [Folding cardboard with art print of 1233722
Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - Oban Nishikie - (Important Art Object) The Yamamba (Woman of the Mountain) is popularly thought of as a sorceress living in the mountains, but she actually was a voracious type of prostitute who preyed on travelers along mountain roads. Edo-period folk songs describe her as a wretched hag plying her wiles on woodcutters or working at weaving. Utamaro has created a type-portrait which effectively suggests the Yamamba's role as a lowly prostitute. Baring her bosom, she is letting Kintaro suck on her big breasts. But, as always in Utamaro prints, the face is so beautiful that one is tempted to speak of worldly desires and spiritual salvation.
