Woman Under Wisteria. [Folding cardboard with art print of Japanese woodblock].
Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - Hashirae - (Important Art Object) Heavy sprays of wisteria blossoms bend and sway as a girl in a black hood forces her way against the brisk May wind, holding her disordered skirts. Ukiyoe artists delighted to focus on moments such as this, infused with eroticism by the inadvertent exposure of bare limbs. Yet, only rarely has an ukiyoe designer succeeded in blending eroticism into art with such moderation as Kiyonaga achieves in this print. He has obtained a pictorial effect especially large for the hashirae format by depicting only the fore part of the full-length figure, and by emphasizing the beautiful lines of the girl's wind-bent posture, which are felicitously repeated in the yielding of the wisteria.
