The Grant was a stop gap solution to give US tankers enough firepower to have a chance to defeat German armor. It housed a 75mm gun in a hull sponson and a 37mm gun in the rotating turret. This combination had obvious limitations and the Grant was not a huge success, but it did achieve its objective of evening the playing field for a short while.
