Text in Japanese and English. - Oban Hand-colored Sumizurie - (Unregistered) This print is one of a series of twelve, all erotic, save this, the initial print, and the last one, which shows a man and woman outdoors. Sumizurie were usually not hand-colored by the publisher but colors were often added by the purchaser later. Moronobu studied Kano and Tosa painting but endeavored for a new style adapted to the tastes of the average people of Edo. From about 1670, he began designing the single sheet prints which contributed to the emergence of woodblocks as an important art form.
